Why Tailoring Your Social Media is Important

We all do it. We scroll, we notice, we compare. Someone else's feed looks polished, confident, full of engagement, and for a moment you wonder what they're doing differently. The truth is, great social media does not happen by accident. It is planned, considered and tailored, and that makes all the difference.

It Is Not Just Marketing, It Is Who You Are

Social media is not just a marketing tool. It is a window into who you are as a business. And people do not buy from businesses, they buy from people they trust. Every post is a chance to show them who that person is, what you stand for, and why they should choose you over anyone else.

Before you write a single word, you need to be clear on who you are actually trying to reach. Not too broad, not too narrow, and never based on assumption. It is important to understand where your business niche sits and who your ideal client really is. Some businesses are posting consistently and confidently for entirely the wrong audience without ever realising it. Getting this right from the start is what makes everything else work.

A Lesson From the Workplace

I once worked alongside a business that actually ran two separate companies, each serving a different part of the market. A colleague joining the team struggled to separate them in her mind and every time she wrote a blog things had to be redone because she kept overlapping the two. This wasn't a social media job, but it does show that sometimes people need a clear message. Not always a direct one, it can be fun, it can be creative, but it needs to give clear direction, a call to action, and not be so complex that the point gets lost.

Know Your Platforms

Different platforms attract different people and the way you show up on LinkedIn is not the same as how you show up on Instagram or Facebook, just like in real life you naturally adjust how you speak depending on who is in the room. The message might be the same but the delivery needs to fit the audience.

Who Is Actually On Each Platform?

This is where it gets interesting, and where a lot of businesses get it wrong.

Instagram
60% under 35
If you're targeting a younger audience, this is where they are
LinkedIn
50%+ earn $100k+
The go-to for reaching decision makers and business owners
TikTok
25–34 biggest group
Not all teenagers, the largest audience is young professionals

Get the platform wrong and you are talking to entirely the wrong room. Knowing where your ideal client actually spends their time is not a nice to have. It is the foundation of everything else.

Timing Is Everything

And timing matters too. Each platform has its own best days and times to post, getting that right means your content actually lands in front of people when they are there to see it. Post at the wrong time and even the best content disappears into the feed without a trace.

Hashtags, Engagement and Showing Up

Hashtags matter, used well they extend your reach and put your content in front of the right people. Used badly they look desperate or worse, land you in front of entirely the wrong audience.

And do not forget engagement. Posting is only half of it. Responding to comments, interacting with others, showing up in the conversation, that is what builds a community rather than just a following. People notice when a business takes the time to respond, especially in the early days when every interaction counts. To see how I can help with your social media, take a look at my services page.

But do not just wait for people to come to you. Get out there and comment on other people's posts, join conversations that are happening in your industry, like and share content that resonates with you. It gets noticed and it gets reciprocated. Tag relevant people or businesses where it is appropriate and genuine, not just for the sake of it. Social media is a two way street and the more you put in the more you get back.

Consistency, Analytics and Repurposing

Consistency of look and feel matters just as much as what you say. Colours, fonts, the style of your images, when these are consistent people start to recognise your posts instantly before they even read your name. That kind of brand recognition takes time to build but it is worth every bit of effort.

Most social media posting apps now include analytics and they definitely help you home in on what is connecting with your audience, and what is not. Comments, follows and likes are a good sign too. When something lands, you build on it. When it does not, you learn from it and move on. Video and reels are increasingly important as well, platforms are favouring them heavily over static posts right now. And one idea can go a long way, with a bit of adaptation the same piece of content can work across multiple platforms rather than starting from scratch every time.

Planning Ahead vs Posting on the Day

A lot of business owners are doing this manually every single day, writing, posting, repeating. Others have discovered the joy of planning ahead, batching content and scheduling it out. That is a great call. It frees up your day, keeps you consistent, and still leaves room to add something in the moment, an event, a win, something that just happened. You get the best of both worlds.

Every post needs to be considered. Not just thrown up and hoped for the best. Your content needs to resonate, to feel relevant, to make someone stop scrolling and actually read what you have to say.

The Connections You Will Make

And here is something that does not get talked about enough, doing social media well brings new connections. New people find you, follow you, engage with you. And from that comes new customers, valuable advice, and people who genuinely add something to your network. That is worth far more than a number on a screen.

There Is No Fast Fix

All new accounts take time to grow. Posting consistently and building your audience organically is worth so much more than buying followers or chasing numbers that have no real interest in your business. Bought followers do not buy from you. They do not engage, they do not refer you, and they do not build your reputation.

Ten thousand followers looks impressive, but how many of them are real potential customers? Better to have a smaller following of people who are genuinely interested in what you do than a big number that means nothing. And it is worth remembering that many of the accounts that look effortlessly established have been doing this for years. It does not happen overnight and it does not happen by accident.

LinkedIn

Results typically start showing within 8 to 16 months with consistent posting

Instagram

Expect 6 to 18 months before meaningful follower growth, the first 3 months can feel very quiet, and that is completely normal

Facebook

The slowest of the three, often 12 to 24 months to gain real organic traction

TikTok

Can move faster if your content lands well, but still not overnight

Organic reach takes longer but it is real. Like anything worth having, it needs a strong foundation to grow from. Do not be disheartened by slow starts, be encouraged by genuine ones.

A Word On Shortcuts

A customer asked me recently if there was an app that could automatically comment on posts for her. AI can handle tasks, organise your documents and save you time in many ways, but it does not think like you and me. One wrong automated comment in the wrong place and the damage it could do to your reputation is not worth thinking about. And it is not just about perception, Google and other platforms can detect automated activity and block your account entirely. Your message is yours. There is no quick way to build trust, but it is absolutely worth the effort.

This Is Where I Come In

But it is a skill. And not everyone has the time to do it well, or simply does not want to be on social platforms at all. That is completely understandable, and it is worth remembering that getting this right actually saves you money. Experience costs you less time, and time is the one thing you cannot get back. The hours you spend staring at a blank screen wondering what to post are hours you could spend doing what you actually do best.

So hand me your pictures, have a quick chat about the angle you want to take, and leave the creative side to me. Honestly, how long would it take you? We all know it takes us longer to do the things that sit outside our own expertise. That is just human. There is no shame in it. There is just a smarter way.

I take the time to learn your business properly, your tone, your values, your audience. I take you through the platforms, we look at the angles and the opportunities, and I help you show up consistently as the person your ideal clients are already looking for.

If you're spending more time thinking about what to post than actually running your business, drop me an email and let's talk it through. Take a look at my services page too.
